Charles Amponsah
Broadcast journalist and digital content producer, specialising in the art of making the complex simple. Based in Bristol.
A broadcast journalist by trade, Charles Amponsah has spent decades criss-crossing the televisual media fence, working with ease on both sides of the camera and the microphone – as on-air ‘talent’ and in programme production. He has been a trusted presence on TV and radio networks including the BBC, CNBC and Reuters among many others.
As a Senior Media Producer at the Council of Europe, he created a wealth of material to promote some of Europe’s most vital values from human rights and democracy to the rule of law. His media content was used by Europe's leading news agencies and viewed by audiences in the millions.
He credits much of his creative acumen to his years as the founder and director of a boutique multimedia production agency in London that amassed clients in areas as diverse as banking and local government.
With a lifelong passion for technology, Charles is especially interested in the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into creative production workflows. His interest and aptitude with AI is yet another way Charles adds value to events as a moderator.

Moderating at an event on freedom of expression at the famous hemicycle of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg. One can’t help but take away a lasting memory of a place where some of the most influential leaders of our time have engaged in world-changing speech and debate.

During an event in Brussels, I planned to include video clips I had filmed earlier with Sir Tim Berners-Lee, known as the creator of the World Wide Web. But the first clip didn’t play, in spite of having rehearsed with the technicians. A career in television and radio – live and recorded – has taught me an important lesson; be prepared for the unexpected. I had transcribed the clips earlier and the text was in my notes, so it was simply a case of keeping calm, quoting the text and carrying on.

A former client once noted of me: “Charles is quick to understand, quick to deliver.” I do genuinely enjoy the planning and research elements of moderation so that I can deliver at that level for clients. I’m also known for my unflappable nature and ability to get on with almost everyone.

While I’m a keen and focused listener, I’m also a rigorous timekeeper, ensuring everyone has their fair share of voice. I regard myself as being quite curious, asking questions to further the audience's understanding of a topic. Often, this leads me to reinterpret or summarise answers for the audience in plain language that is more easily understood. This is an especially valued skill.

The ability to debate beyond the soundbite. In broadcast journalism, it can be difficult to extend a debate to wider issues or really explore a topic. Moderating at an event allows audiences a chance to really hear and understand what is thought and said in possibly more meaningful and engaging ways.
