As a moderator, Tamsin Rose uses her lifetime of experience in the European policy arena to reveal breakthrough perspectives, actionable insights and drive consensus amongst diverse participants, often with opposing views. She is known for enabling speakers and audiences alike to see the big picture and discover new ways of approaching some of Europe’s toughest challenges.

Throughout her career as a journalist and communications expert, she has lived in Moscow, Paris and Brussels and carried out assignments in 33 European countries and counting. Health policy has been a common thread throughout. She is known for creating safe spaces for patients and caregivers to share their stories in ways that shape policy, while translating scientific jargon into plain language that all people can understand.

Tamsin has served as Secretary-General of the European Public Health Alliance, a pan-European platform of NGOs, as well as been a Senior Fellow for Health at Friends of Europe and the Africa Europe Foundation. While in Moscow, she was Deputy Head of Press and Information at the EC Delegation. Her experience leading communication for EU-funded projects has given her unique insights into the workings of government and how policy actually gets implemented on the ground.

She is also known for her acumen as a trainer. Tamsin offers coaching in public speaking as well as workshops on facilitation and stakeholder engagement among other skills. She is especially sought after by institutions, NGOs and philanthropic foundations.

Q&A with Tamsin

  • Moderating a workshop on the changing labour market at the Gothenburg summit, featuring eight Heads of State, the Secretary-General of the ILO, various dignitaries and local students. The event was translated in five languages and live streamed across the EU. In my opening monologue, I used the life experience of three generations of women in my family to highlight how opportunities in the labour market have evolved.

  • In the Brussels bubble, points of conflict often get swept under the rug. I’ve moderated debates where issues can get highly charged, such as between conservationists and the fishing industry, climate change experts and tourism operators, and trade unions and business associations. I guide these conversations so that each stakeholder speaks their truth and can be acknowledged by others, even if agreement is not reached.

  • Making technical subjects approachable and enabling meaningful exchanges on sensitive issues. I build connection and trust with audiences, taking them on a journey through an event. Creating a sense of intimacy and trust with an audience gives me a huge amount of freedom to play.

    I enjoy trying out new techniques and have led conference audiences in guided meditation, blind tastings, music making and other artistic expressions. By creating rapport with the audience, everything is possible.

  • Brainstorming on how to make events interesting and memorable. I create a warm environment that feels safe for speakers to move away from their briefing notes and reach out to the audience in a meaningful way. I have great tips and tricks to lighten heavy agendas and find ways to squeeze in audience participation.

  • The opportunity to create pin-drop moments, when the audience and speakers are deeply engaged with each other. I love the connection with the audience, inviting people to step out of their comfort zone and try something new.  

    Making good use of time, yours and mine. An agenda is a social contract with the audience.  I respect the timekeeping and get good attention in return.
